what to do when you get a message that say windows
explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close as
soon as I click on the start menu or click on a icon.

First, run a virus scan, second, be sure all your drivers are up to date,
third, be sure all your applications are up to date and compatible with XP,
fourth, go to Event Viewer and see if you can find an error that corresponds
to the time when you receive this error. Open Control Panel, go to
Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer.

As to the second and third options above, you might get some added clues if
you have a retail version of Windows XP. If you do, place the CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility."
The report may give a hint as to various problem apps and hardware on your
setup. If you don't have a retail version but have a broadband connection,
you can download this roughly 50MB wizard to run a check on your system:
