windows explorer

I am unable to open any folder on my destop. When I try
for instance, to open my computer folder, the machine
hiccups and all the destop icons disappear for about 20 or
so seconds and some of my lower right tray icons ungroup,
ie, symantec ungroups and displays the fax icon, norton
ghost icon and the anti-virus icon. Can someone please
help me with this dilemma?
