Windows Explorer will not remain in Details View for files

No matter how many times I reset the File view in Windows Explorer to Details
View, this configuration is changed back to Tiles view after re-booting. I
have set this to Details View in Windows Explorer and in My Computer and
checked that the box "Remember each folder's view settings" is ticked in
Advanced, and that this setting applies to all folders, but even during a
Windows session this can revert to Tiles View at a later time.
Please can anyone suggest a solution to this problem. I have read several
articles referring to this, but none of the supposed remedies appear to work.
Something must be re-setting one or more values in the Registry, but I cannot
find where this is occurring.

I asked this very question just this morning, and got this answer:

Here's the drill:

First, you've got to edit the Registry to modify two instances of
BagMRU Size (400-Sp1, 5000-Sp2). I use a decimal value of
8,000+.
**Then if you want a fresh start - You need to delete the Bags key
where all the individual folders are numerically listed/stored.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
BagMRU Size = 8000 (or Greater) Decimal value
Bags (Delete this key if you want to start over Fresh)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
BagMRU Size = 8000 (or Greater) Decimal Value
Bags (Delete this key if you want to start over Fresh)

Reboot

Then define a "Default" view and apply to all folders. Finally, open
and position each as you like. Afterwards, XP should maintain
the views unless you reach the roll-off value.

Hi,

WindowsXP will remember the settings of up to 400 folders, after that it
starts forgetting some. See this from MVP Kelly for a way to increase this
number:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 2, increase the folder view size limit to 8000

Thanks for your reply, but I have already tried changing the BagMRU size
firstly to 8000 and then to 16000 in both registry entries. This worked for
a while, but now the same problem has returned unless I've an unusually large
number of files and folders on my machine. The latest count was 45,000 files
and 4,023 folders, so I'm wondering whether this number is ecessive and is
causing the problem. Any thoughts anybody please.

I spend an inordinate amount of time resetting
Explorer to the view I want.

I've been through all the stuff of shift+click to close,
apply this view to all windows, remember each folder's
size, etc.

It simply WILL NOT stick.

It'll seem to be fine for a few days, but then,
apparently at random, certain directories display
in the useless icon/thumbnail mode when they didn't before,
the position/size/types of columns displayed will
be totally reset, etc.

I want the following to be PERMANENT:

List>>Details with the pointless "camera model"
and other useless crap columns gone FOREVER.

The size/position of Explorer to be whatever I last
left it at, or, always the same as when I last shift+clicked
it closed.

ALL settings I make to the Explorer display of root
directory of a drive to propogate to ALL existing
AND future directories ON THAT DRIVE!

Maunal reg entries welcome, I can deal with it.

Not a virus/spyware issue, please don't bombard me with useless
boilerplate links for that stuff - that's all taken care of.

This is much more specific than that.

Check under the ShellNoRoam, "Bags" sub-key and scroll to find the
highest numbered Bag. While I use a large decimal value for BagMRU
size, my current setup has reached only number 1071 for folder view.
I can't really speak to file/folder limitations, but 45K files doesn't seem
out of line. However, 4023 folders does seem on the high side.
Even with the "Fix" I originally posted, I've had occasions where a
particular folder will "Reset" (such as My Computer), but after adjusting
it, the state seems to remain. In your case it could be something other
than Roll-Off that causes the view(s) to switch.

I haven't had time to try it yet (make sure to make a restore point
first)
but I bet this kinda surgery will fix this ridiculous behavior once and
for
all...

How about inside a file selector box. My XP wonæt remember the
settings here (always come up wrong view, wrong sorting)
