Windows Explorer Slow

Jim

I just re-installed Windows XP. When I open windows explorer, it is
very slow in displaying the local drives. I get the "flashlight"
looking for drives for almost 2 minutes before the drives appear and
I'm able to browse my files.

The same situation exists when I attempt to save a file and need to
browse to a directory to save it in?

The pc has a new copy of XP installed, all updates applied, no
viruses, no spyware, all necessary services running.

My event viewer shows this error. I've researched it but no help.

The server {A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811} did not register
with DCOM within the required timeout.

Any possible causes/solutions?

Well, just a bit more research on the error message showed the Class ID of A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811 was listed in the registry as belonging to some object named "WIA Device Manager". So I went to http://support.microsoft.com and did a search on "WIA Device Manager" and found several articles which indicate the problem may be associated with a scanner or camera. Got one?

This may've helped me with the same problem. I found explorer to be very
slow updating icons when browsing folders. It would take up to a minute
or two.

After seeing Vanguard's reply concerning WIA, I remembered that I had
turned off the Windows Image Acquisition service. I have since turned it
back on and explorer seems to be much faster. It's too early to tell but
this may have solved the problem for me!

Thanks!

Rick

Guys,

believe it or not: I have exactly the same symptoms (dcom error relate
to A1F4....
However ... disabling, enabling, manual setting of the WIA servic
doesn't make any difference to the slow response from the explorer.

Maybe another symptom: wenn IE is started and a URL is entered withou
http://, it takes a similar amount of time before the requested page i
displayed. Entering http:// in front of the URL, the page will b
displayed within normal waiting times.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions ...

Mark.
