Windows Explorer ...Save As

Hi, I had exactly the same symptoms a couple of years ago at work with
Windows NT 4. Now it's on XP on my home laptop.

When I use Save As, both in Excel and Word, I can modify the 'File name' and
'Save as type' fields with no problem. But when I try to change the 'Save
in' field, oh my, it can take literally 5 minutes for the drop down list to
appear, and each time I try to change something in this field it takes AGES.
I get there in the end but it's hell! Any ideas will be welcome.

Have an active USB device, such as a card reader? Temporarily disable it
in Control Panel|SYSTEM|HARDWARE|DEVICE MANAGER and see if that makes a
difference.

That may be a problem, but it would not be the same as he had on his NT4
machine as USB and NT4 do not mix
