Windows Explorer opens on startup

For no reason that I can determine, Windows Explorer now opens automatically
to the "My Documents" folder most (but not all) of the time when I start
Windows. Does anyone know how do deal with this annoyance?
Thanks.

Thanks for the link, but nothing that was suggested in there helped. Do you
have any other suggestions?

Did you try this?

My Documents pop Ups at Start Up
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555294

SYMPTOMS
When you start your computer My Document appears at Start Up.

CAUSE
It happens if there is a registry change in the Userinit value.

RESOLUTION
1. Start>Run>Regedit>ok

2. Now navigate to the following key:
HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\
CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3. Look down the list in the Right Hand pane, scroll down to the
value Userinit This value should read:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,
(The comma at the end must also be there)

4. If the value is different from that mentioned above then Right
Click on the Userinit value and, from the drop down menu, select
Modify. Type in the value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,in
the Modify dialogue box click OK

5. Exit the Registry. Restart your computer.

Yes, I have already checked that, and the value is correct. Do you have any
other suggestions? Thanks.

I don't see this post from the beginning, so if I repeat what has
already been tried, I apologize.

Check program paths in these start-up registry keys for any without
quotes and add them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Sample:

Microsoft Office
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE -b -l

Microsoft Office
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE" -b -l

I made the registry changes that you suggested, re-started my machine, and
the problem has disappeared (at least for now).
Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise, and to help me deal
with this annoyance.

That was it?

I'm afraid that my problem has re-appeared. Windows Explorer is now opening
automatically most of the time when I start Windows. Do you have any other
suggestions?
Thanks again.

I have not solved the problem yet. I have tried the advice given in response
to my posts, but nothing seems to help.

I remember now how I fixed this years ago. I'm not sure if this will be
helpfull, but at least you have something new to work at.

My case was a bad folder that got created, somehow. Windows would want
to open it at startup, but since there was something wrong with it
Windows would instead open its default folder - My Documents. I had to
look carefully at all my folders till I found one that looked like it
didn't belong, deleted it, rebooted and no more problems.

That's all I can think of to help, good luck.
