Windows Explorer opens on startup

I'm new to XP, having used W98SE for many years, and have been unable to
solve a problem. A couple of weeks ago, whenever I turned on my
computer, it would load normally, but also open a Windows Explorer
window, and always to the same subdirectory on the C: drive. I've
looked in msconfig and regedit, but if the answer lies there, I must
have missed it. I'm getting frustrated with this.

How can I get Windows Explorer not to open a window on startup? Many thanks for
any and all help with this.

What is the folder? (subdirectory)

Check in Msconfig for any oddities.
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
If you cannot see anything in Msconfig then:

Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message.

Have I missed something?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Bert -

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, Windows Explorer is opening a different
folder. The details are in my reply to Alan Edwards.

Thanks again,
JT

Yes, you are probably missing something.
You should not be looking for a reference to Explorer, as a folder
reference will open it, so you should be looking for the folder that
is opening.

Of the Visioneer entries below, I suspect this one is causing the
problem with incorrect quoting.
OneTouch Monitor c:\program files\visioneer onetouch\onetouchmon.exe
All Users

Check by disabling it in Msconfig.

Start>Run MSCONFIG, and look at all the items that are are supposed to
run at startup. There will be some syntax error in one of them. For
example, an incomplete path or a long entry with missing quotes, etc.

You will probably have to locate the appropriate item in the Registry
and correct it there.

If you are unable to determine which entry is causing the problem,
disable a few (in MSCONFIG), reboot, until you isolate the one
responsible.

You should be aware that the "error" in the bad entry is not
necessarily obvious. I've seen Registry entries that looked perfectly
OK, but for some reason Windows insisted on having quotes on these
particular entries, but not on others.

If the problem started only after you had installed something, then
that something's entry is the likely culprit. If the entry has
mismatched quotes, fix that. If there are no quotes, then add some,
being careful about correct placement around switches, etc.
