Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) closes when type of files to search is specified

This was just noticed a couple of days ago. When I attempt to search
for files and I click on "Search" and then one of the file-type
selections like "All files", explorer abruptly closes. All desktop
icons and toolbar disappear and then reappear. Some programs that
were running in my system tray are missing.


I also have problems with the Windows Media Player in that it starts
to open, flashes the normal screen and then closes. Don't know if
this is related or a separate issue.

Does anyone know of the cause of this issue and how to fix it?

All of my spyware and antivirus programs show clean.

DO you get a request to Send and Error Report to Microsoft.
Check EVENTVWR.MSC for error logs and see what is logged.

What is happening, Explorer is crashing (not Windows Explorer) which are
basically the same programs.
First:

1. Control Panel | Folder Options | View Tab
2. Check Run Folder in Separate Process (or something stating that)
3. CLose

Close any Windows Explorer windows or better yet reboot.
Try the Search ... WIndows Explorer may close but Explorer should not crash.

Re-post and let us know if this happens. Then we need to possibly fix
Search.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the time the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I do not get a request to send and report error to MS. Just an abrupt
close.

The following is the only log at the time windows explorer closed:

Description:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

I checked "open folder in separate window" but windows explorer still
crashes (closes abruptly) when the type of files to be searched is
selected.
