WMP10 flashes screen & then closes, explorer.exe closes when search is selected - NEED HELP

A few days ago I thought I was successful in getting rid of some
malware. I thought everything was working OK now.

However, I have just discovered that when try to open Windows Media
Player 10 the screen flashes and then the closes. The same action
occurs if I dbl-click on a file to play.

Also when I open Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) and select "Search"
and then select what I want to search for, explorer closes, the
taskbar and all desktop icons disappear for a few seconds. Then the
desktop icons and taskbar re-appear but I am missing several icons in
my system tray.

All or none of this my be related to each other or to the malware that
I had.

I have a clean run of Spybot, AdAware, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, AVG
Anti-virus, AVG AntiSpyware, and Windows Malicious Software Removal
Tool.

My GUESS is that this malware that I had (some Trojans) clobbered
various parts of my system, BUT THIS IS JUST A GUESS.

Can anyone help point me to a solution?

TIA, Rich

ALSO:

Internet Explorer promptly closes with no error messages when I enter
a URL. The only way I can get IE to open is to start with a blank
page. I use Firefox, so this fault was not immediately apparent.

A new clue: If I run mplayer2.exe in the Windows Media Player folder,
I can play movies and mp3's.
