Windows Explorer layout question

I just noticed something for the first time.

Windows Explorer shows a listing of all that is stored on my hard
drive of course. But I see what looks like duplication to me.

I created a folder called 'new folder' on my desktop and copied a few
things into it such as 2 .avi clips and 2 .doc files. When I look in
Windows Explorer, I see the folder 'new folder' listed under 'Desktop'
and under 'c:\Documents and Settings\user\desktop'. Both contain the
items in that folder.

I am concerned, or at the very least kinda curious, does this reflect
that double space is being used by the content of said folder? Or is
just the way Windows Explorer chooses to show the desktop? Is there
wasted space here?

Maybe I have too much time on my hands?

Answer (b) from your list. Nothing to be concerned about, no wasted space:
the "actual" desktop will show a combination of

- contents of C:\Documents and Settings\user\desktop
- contents of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\desktop
- "special" icons (My Computer, Network Neighbourhood, Recycle Bin, etc).
