Windows Explorer in XP won't let me select Outlook Express

When I loaded programs into my new Compaq in Windows XP,
I briefly had both Outlook Express 6.1 and Microsoft
Outlook 97 loaded. I have since deleted every remnant I
can find of Outlook 97. Now, my Outlook Express works
fine by itself, but if I try to access it by clicking on
the mail icon in Internet Explorer or on a web address in
a web page, the computer does nothing or dumps me out of
internet explorer. When in Explorer, I go to TOOLS,
INTERNET OPTIONS, the the PROGRAMS tab, the mail service
blank only has Outlook as its sole option, NOT OUTLOOK
EXPRESS. How do I get Internet Explorer to go to Outlook
Express for mail services? I have made sure in Outlook
Express that it is indeed slected as the default mail
handler, but that has no effect on Internet Explorer's
misbehavior. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Run sfc /scannow in the Command Shell (dos prompt). Make
sure your Windows media is in the cdrom drive. This may
correct your problem.
