SendTo Not Working for Photos

J

Jim

I got a new computer with an XP OS. When I selected photos on the old XP
system and used the Send To feature, it sent those photos to Outlook
Express. With the new system, when I select a group of photos in My
Pictures and use the Send To feature, it opens Outlook instead of Outlook
Express. I've tried the following fixes:

1. Made OE my default mail handler via Tools, Options in Outlook Express.
2. Made OE my default mail handler via Tools, Options, Programs in Internet
Explorer.
3. Registered OE by running the command "C:\program files\outlook
express\msimn.exe" /reg.
4. Reregistered the .eml file type in My Computer per Q312355 (settings
there were already okay as default)
5. Opened regedit and browsed to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express. I had the two
required entries there per Q306098, with the DLLPath value as
%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msoe.dll.
6. Also went to Start, Programs, Add/Remove Programs, Set Program Access
and Defaults, and set OE as the mail handler there.

After these actions, when I tried to send photos from My pictures, they
still went to Outlook. Then when I opened OE, that program was, once again,
no longer my default mail handler.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I fixed the problem yesterday (by accident). I browsed to my Send To folder
and tried to edit the MapiMail file to open with OE instead of Outlook. I
couldn't make that shortcut work. I then tried to reselect Outlook and my
Send To function no longer opened anything. I restored to a backup from an
hour earlier. When I rebooted, the Send To command opened OE, as desired
(go figure). However, I have my Contacts saved in Outlook. Each time I
open Outlook, it hijacks the Send To operation and resets it to Outlook. I
tried to register OE per your article at windowsxp.mvps.org/sendtomail.htm.
My Send To option still sent photos to Outlook, instead of OE. I rebooted
and reapplied the setting in Outlook Express to make it the default mail
handler. Now, Send To directs my photos to OE. How do I permanently set
that path? I did find this link http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm,
but don't know if it will provide a permanent fix.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

A few ideas,

#1

Open the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe) and navigate to the
following key:

[HKCU\Identities\{E47202B3-5B8C-406C-8539-3EC407CCDAD3}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Mail]

The {E47202B3-5B8C-406C-8539-3EC407CCDAD3} key will be different on your
machine. Find and double-click "No Check Default" and change the value to 0.
Reboot your machine. If your problem still exists then go to Step 2.

#2

Open the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe) and navigate to the
following key:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail]

Find and double-click "(default)" and change the value to 'Outlook Express'
without the quotes. Reboot your machine. If your problem still exists then
go to Step 3.

#3

Try the little program from Ramesh's site

Set the default email client on a per-user basis
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm

Reboot your machine. If your problem still exists then go to Step 4.

#4

Seek assistance in the Microsoft Outlook newsgroup which is located here.
Explain the problem and explain Outlook not Outlook Express is always taking
control of the default email client when opening MS Outlook and I wish to
have Outlook Express as my default email client.

1. I didn't have a "No Check Default" entry under that key.
2. The default entry there was already outlook express
3. I ran the DefaultMail utility from Ramesh's site, and that seemed to fix
the problem. I was already aware of that utility, but didn't run it earlier
because the description didn't really fit my situation. Thanks for the vote
of confidence in the utility. "Send To" appears to be locked to OE now,
even after using Outlook Contacts.

Thank you for your help,
Jim
