Windows Explorer Hang on right-click after W2K SP4

Beat Gossweiler

I am running Win2000 SP4 on a IBM ThinkPad R30.
After Installing SP4, i experience a hang of the Windows
Explorer (explorer.exe) for exactly 4 minutes when
performing the following task:

Right Click (or e.g. delete) on any file (not a folder)
within folder "\WINNT\Profiles\xxxx\Start Menu" or any
folder below this one (xxx can be any user).

After exactly 4 minutes the context menu is displayed or
the delete performed, whatever requested.

To me it looks like the requested action is "looking
somewhere for something", and some service which times out
releases the hang after 4 minutes.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Beat

- Have you checked your System for Viruses recently? If so, did you do this
with up-to-date Virus Definitions?

Free Online Virus Scan: www.pandasoftware.com/activescan

- Check you System for Spyware/Malware as well.

If you have not yet a Tool to do this , then I suggest that you get AdAware:

- The basic Version is free and can be downloaded here:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ (download the latest
definitions as well)

Hope this helpls. Regards,

Fabio

Fabio,

Yes, i have checked the system for viruses with brand new virus
definitions and have also performed a check with ad-aware. No
inidication whatsoever.

I have also started the system with no drivers/services started
(MSConfig), no luck.

When starting the system in safe mode, the problem does not occur.

I posted the same issue. I have reloaded several of our
workstations. Once I got ot SP 4 I encountered the same
problem. I finally loaded a HDD with just Windows 2000 and
went through all the updates. I backed up the HDD so I
could uninstall SP4. SP4 caused the problem and
uninstalling it fixed it.
