Windows Explorer Folders

Since I downloaded a couple of updates to winxp pro, i
have had trouble with windows explorer. once i open
explorer, if i click on a folder, usually the contents
open on the right. if i click on a folder in the right
pane or left once this behavior occurs, the search
companion pops up and the folder name appears in
the "location to search" field. i actually have to hit
the search button in order to see the contents. in
addition, each click opens in a separate window. i have
gone into control panel and changed the universal folder
options, i have changed folder options in windows
explorer, if i click on the folder tab on the taskbar, it
changes to the folder view, then the next click takes it
back to the search option. it is truly driving me nuts.
i have changed the folder options to apply to all
folders, but still the same. if i right-click on start,
what comes up first is search instead of open. i know
this is where the problem lies, but don't know how to
correct it. Someone please help. Feel free to email
