When viewing files in Windows Explorer, My Documents,
etc. I no longer have the usual (Internet Explorer) icon
associated with .htm & .html files. I've made sure that
these files are associated and always set to open with
internet explorer (Folder Options --> File Types) to no
avail. Can anybody help me with this annoying little
problem? Thanks in advance, Simon.

Try resetting the icon cache.
To refresh the icons in the system change the size of icons in Start -
Control Panel - Display - Appearance - Advanced, click apply then change the
size back.

If that doesn't help type regedit in Start Run and look up
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon
What does it say.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html
What is the default value here (should be htmlfile)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13}\DefaultIcon
What is this here. This is used if the first one is missing.

Hi David, thank you kindly for your initial response.
I tried resetting the icon cache to no avail. As per
your regedit questions:

-- If that doesn't help type regedit in Start Run and
look up
-- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon
-- What does it say.

there is no "DefaultIcon" folder or entry, just
a "(Default)" entry with a data value of "HTML Document"
within the main HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile folder.

-- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html
-- What is the default value here (should be htmlfile)

this one is correct.

-- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-
00AA00686F13}\DefaultIcon
-- What is this here. This is used if the first one is
missing.

values is "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe,1"

Many thanks for your time & support David. Cheers,

Simon.

ps. posted this reply as a new post attn. David Candy.
Hope this doesn't cause any hassles.

I have a clean XP, no office on it (can't get motivated to type the product
key, esp as I can't see it without glasses). But there is no html.document
in a standard clean XP.

Just installed that horrid office XP, [you have to wait a bit] - With you
again. I hate Times New Roman your post looked like it said html.document
because of the serif on the L witch is a MS way of specifing things and is
unexpected here. But it's just the descriptionm you see in explorer.. Least
I have Word installed again.

So it should look
htmlfile
- Browse In Place
- CLSID (if this is missing it wont pick up the backup icon)
- Default Icon
- ScriptHostEncode
- Shell
- [5 sub keys edit/open etc]
- ShellEx
- Icon Handler [This replaces normal icons with office icons if
you created the file in an office program]

These are all known as keys (not folders). The equivelent to files is called
Values - either default or named.

Just confirm that htmlfile is similar to above, you imply there is nothing
there? There are two more backup settings. One sets the thumbnail viewer
(can html files be viwed as thumbnails) and the other will treat it as text,
like notepad will open them if there are no shell or clsid keys, and if no
DefaultIcon or CLSID keys then it will have a text icon. What icon do you
have?

Hi David,

thank you for your reply. Sorry it's taken me a while to
get back to you.

On review of my htmlfile entry in regedit, I have all the
keys you mentioned, except for the 'Default Icon' key; so
my htmlfile entry looks like:

- BrosesInPlace
- CLSID
- ScriptHostEncode
- Shell (6 subkeys)
- ShellEX

note I have 6 subkeys in the 'Shell' key. Don't know if
this would matter though. When I view .htm or .html
files as thumbnails, the icon associated with them is
(for lack of a better word) that 'generic' one used when
Windows doesn't know which app to use to open them.
However, if I open a .htm or .html file, it is opened
automatically with Internet Explorer. This problem is
strange as I'm only about 3 weeks into a fresh format &
installation of XP. It didn't occur until I reinstalled
Macromedia Studio MX, but don't think it is related as
I've used this product since its release.

I appreciate all your time & help. Just one more thing -
I'm new to these MS newsgroups; is there a better way to
keep track of my posts/replies than just searching for
the topic/name etc.? It's taken me ages to track down
your reply as this was the first time it has shown up in
a search.

Cheers mate, Simon.

This exchange was immensely helpful to me. Thank you both. My solution
required more, but this all got me on the right track.
In My case, Adobe GoLive had chnaged parts of
CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597} which is listed as the
persistent handler for htmlfile
Under "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42042206-2D85-11D3-8CFF-005004838597}\Old
Icon\htmlfile\DefaultIcon" there was a reference to something to do with a
Adobe GoLive 6.0 executable. Changing that to "(PATH)\iexplore.exe,1" fixed
my problem immediately.
