Windows Explorer Fails to Open 1 folder

H

Harold Dozier

Am using XP SP2, am the only user, 3+ ghz cpu, 512 RAM, 40 GB hdd(12+GB
free). In my census folder, I have a sub folder for each year, and a
few other folders for special families--a total of about 24 sub folders.
Most files in the folders are image files--mostly jpg. Have had this
going for many months. Recently, I am unable to open the year 1910
folder. As I click it to expand to see files, the computer hangs up,
gives me chance to send report to MS (which I have done several times).
To return to operation, have to use ALT CNTR DEL and close the "not
responding" year 1910 folder. The year 1910 sub folder is about same
size as several other "year" sub folders which give no trouble.

Have run AV, have moved sub folder elsewhere and still have problem.

Any ideas appreciated.

Where is your census folder located?
What happens if you boot to Safe Mode and attempt to open the folder?
Have you checked the Event Viewer to see details on the error?
Click Start > Run, type in: eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
Double click on the proper line/s for the failed event to get detailed info.
Check any support links for the event for a possible solution.

Thanks for reply, Brian.
The census folder giving me trouble is located at
C:\CENSUS IMAGES\1910 Census
However, the problem remains even if I move this folder to be at C:\

The problem was still with me in Safe Mode.

I have not yet checked the Event Viewer after the error. Will do so today.

This morning, the folder did open 2 times out of 5 tries.

Just made a few more checks and now the problem intermittently occurs in
other subfolders of C:\CENSUS IMAGES\ and in other folders of C:\ !

I will spend some time looking at Event Viewer and seeing how widespread
the problem is.

Brian,
Putting files in new folder does not help. Your suggestion to look in
the Event Viewer was a good one. I can see when the problems began and
it was right at the time of some MS updates that have been mentioned as
causing a lot of people problems--inre KB908531 (ms06-015). My problem
closely parallels what MS06-015 describes. I am trying to work my way
through the suggestions for this problem. Seems MS is going to put out
something new on, or about, April 25.

Thanks for your help.

That's my understanding, a patch for the patch sometime in the coming week. I've seen some thread responses where Kelly T. MS-MVP has created a fix, I can't find any in this ng so it must be one of the others. I can not elaborate if it is what you need or not though as I'm not sure what the fix does.

Does this patch for the patch have anything to do with this
http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=185300378
patch for the patch for the patch?

The Information Week article claims that one of the items released
by Microsoft this last week, but doesn't tell which Microsoft number
it was, was the result of Microsoft loosing another lawsuit and
thus making a change that was going to partially disable ActiveX
content. Now this sounds vaguely like what we have been seeing,
that particular kinds of file content don't work they way the did
before.

But I can't figure out whether this is the same thing or not.

Thank you
