Windows Explorer Errors

Guest

I'm running XP Pro on a Sony Vaio laptop with 1gb of memory. Everything has
been fine until a week ago when I suddenly started getting Windows Explorer
error messages immediately after logging on to my main user account. On
closing the message, it would immediately reappear so I would leave it and
then find that various services (IE, word, Start menu, etc) would freeze
necessitating a reboot.
I then started accessing my other user accounts and started getting the same
messages although the freezing does not happen as frequently.
I've checked the error log and the following message constantly appears:

'Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000dd4a' .

There are also a several of these messages:

'The COM+ Event system detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\xom1z\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.'

I've ran various virus / malware / spyware type checkers and register
cleaners and the problem remains. Have also followed the clean boot process
with no success.

Note that the problem does not occur in Safe Mode.

Any help would be appreciated.

Please post a copy of the Error / Warning Reports as they appear in
System / Application logs in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error
Report. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've followed your instructions and
the pastes are below. The first is the windows explorer error, second is the
COM+ error, third is the IE error that also occurs and the fourth is a
Dr.Watson error reflecting a message that also occurs with the problems. Note
that I'm writing this message via a new user account I've set up on the
system that has so far not suffered any error messages.
