If you click on any icon on the desktop or attempt to
access any program from the Start Menu, you receive thjis
message: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

You have a choice to Send a Report or Don't Send Report.
If you click on Don't, you are directed back to the
Desktop. If you click on Send, you are told to connect to
the Internet (which you can't do since you get the error
message again).

Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem:
appname:Explorer.exe
modname:Wininet.dll

When I click a start menu component such as Control panel
I recieve the error. After I click an option the screen
shows the desktop wallpaper for a Min then icons appear
again. This is frushrating since Control panel does not
load up.
Loads of people are suffering from this problem, I have
seen others on this and other forums. No one seems to
know the solution. Adaware and spybot do not work by the
way. There have been sujestions that MS updates have
caused this on some machines. It would be nice to get to
the bottom of this error.

This is very common in the XP so don't worry, the
solution is very simple there is a specific patch from
windows update that deals with this error.
Either use windows update and if you can't get it there
then go to Microsoft.com they will have it there.
That's all there is to it my friend good hunting.

P.S if you ever get frozen on your os all you have to do
is push the button on your tower and hold until your
tower shuts off, don't worry no damage will result from
this.it's what you call an emergency shut down.
Hope this helps you Chuck.

Do you know the exact download number for this "fix?" I
scrolled through the XP Patches and Downloads and didn't
see anything that fit this challenge.

Please advise

Chuck
