Whenever I try to access my documents/my computer (or any
subfolders) or internet explorer from etiher the desktop
or startmenu the entire desktop refreshs and the folder
does not open.
Have tried running a virus scan but this found nothing.
Any suggestions??
Thanks, Sarah

Start, run, type in: sfc /scannow, hit enter.
Have your xp cd handy.

I have tried this, it asked me to insert the SP1 CD in
order to fix a certain file. I did this and the scan
finished but the problem still remains!

I am experiencing the same problems - cannot access
internet explorer, windows explorer, my documents/my
computer, control panel and recycle bin. My virus scan
also found nothing. I have noticed that explorer.exe
tries to start (looking at taskmgr.exe) then exits.

Repair install:

Boot from the XP cd, and when prompted hit enter to begin setup. Press F8 to
accept the license agreement. It will then search and find your existing XP
install. Select it, and choose R for repair. Back up any important data
files in case something goes wrong.

What is "the certain file"?

Please do not hijack threads, even if you think you have the same
problem. It makes it difficult to help you and the original poster. To
both of you, 1) are you sure your antivirus definitions are updated?
and 2) scan for and remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to
update these programs before running them. These programs are free, so
run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. Also empty your
Temporary Internet Files.

Once you are sure your computers are virus and spyware-free, if the
problem persists repost. Separately.
