Windows explorer crashes on right-click

XP's windows explorer crashes when I try to right click
on the local hard disk icon or on any of its files &
folders. The pop-up menu with
the "Open", "Explore", "Properties" etc. options never
shows up and windows explorer crashes 3 seconds after the
right-click. This does not always happen but it happens
most of the time. The windows explorer crashes with the
classic windows message prompting me to send information
to microsoft about the crash. I searched for
spyware/viruses (using ad-aware, spybot s&d, spy
sweeper/Norton anti-virus) but i found nothing, my system
is clean. This is weird as it never occurs to me before.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks a lot for your time.

problem could be with the system files. You can try sfc /scannow from the dos prompt. It will repair and reinstall all the corrupted system files. Before starting this procedure ensure that you close all the background process.
