Virus or framework 1.1 ??

Gary

I'm not sure if this is a virus problem or a problem caused by
Microsoft.net framework 1.1

About 2 months ago I got an ordinary-looking notice from Microsoft to
install an update. It was Microsoft.net framework 1.1. I had a hard
time getting it to install successfully, but eventually it did so. My
system then started behaving erratically, somtimes freezing-up, and
sometimes crashing on reboot.

I got rid of Microsoft.net framework 1.1 via the Control Panel.

Here is the current manifestation of the problem:

In Windows Explorer, when I right click on the C drive and get
"Properties", and then tell the system to do a Disk cleanup, the
system crashes. Then when I reboot, WINDOWS INSTALLER comes on, trying
to install COPY. The problem is stopped (until I must reboot again) by
first hitting "Cancel" a few times (it usually restarts.) Then, I must
terminate WINDOWS INSTALLER via the TASK MANAGER.

I use Windows XP Home, Norton Antivirus, and SPYBOT. Norton updates
itself at least a few times per day, and I update Spybot at least 2X
per week. I run them both often. I always accept updates from
Microsoft, and this is the 1st time I'm sory for it.

Any ideas?

Gary, please read this article about .NET Framework updates :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 .
The problem is often caused by not disabling antivirus software during
installation of .NET Framework modules and updates. You did not say if you
have any other versions of .NET Framework installed such as 2.0, 3.0 or even
3.5 . I am sure you know how to disable Norton AV Auto-protect, don't you?

Happy New Year!

Hi Allan,

I went to the website you suggested and ran Windows Install Cleanup. I
think it solved my problem, but I caused myself another, bigger one!

I neglected to exclude the good programs installed by the installer,
and now microsoft word doesn't work (needs to be re-installed.) Worse
yet, my CD RW causes the system to crash when I try to read anything
from it.

I have my valid Windows XP Home disc and my product key. Do you know
how I can simply fdisk everthing away and just reinstall Windows XP
home? I'll start over from scratch.

Gary, have you tried booting in Safe Mode to try to recover to a previous
configuration? Press F8 repeatedly while booting up. I am sorry if I did not
emphasize that when running the Windows Install Cleanup utility that you
only want to remove the entries pertaining to .NET Framework and nothing
else. If you want to reinstall Windows which I hope you do not have to do,
just put the Windows XP disk in the machine and restart. Does your system
have a recovery console built in, such as one provided by the manufacturer?

Gary, besides what I told you in my previous post, have you tried running
System Restore to fix your problem caused by Windows Install Cleanup? I make
a practice of creating a manual System Restore point before running Windows
Install Cleanup. You said that you can see your CD-Rom in My Computer but
when you tried to access it you get an error. Did you by any chance have
Roxio Easy CD writing software installed? If you remove the Windows Install
information for your applications they all have to be reinstalled, including
Norton IS and MS Windows components.
