Removal of .NET Framework 1.1 requires disk

I get a Windows Update error. It turns out I need to uninstall Microsoft.net
Framework 1.1 (+ recent versions) and reinstall them. When I try to uninstall
I am asked to "Insert the Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 disk and click OK."

I don't think I ever had disks for Microsoft.NET. How do I uninstall it
without the disks?

I tried a few manual methods listed on the Microsoft web site, but I still
get the same message (disk required).
