Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1, SP1 Will Not Install

L

Lynn Quinlan

Hi there,

Had to re-install my XP. Ran the Windows Update and then Microsoft Update.
Custom install. Had 96 items to download and install, including MS.NET
Frameworks. Have enabled Automatic Updating so I keep being reminded to run
this update. It keeps failing, with this message:

Some updates could not be installed.

The following updates were not installed.
Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1, Service Pack 1.

First. Is this an essential item that has to be installed? If so, how is
this best accomplished?

Second. If it is not required then how do I tell the system to stop
reminding me about installing this update.

Help much appreciated. Everything else ran just fine!

Thanks so much!

THis message happened to me also. Turns out I already had .net framework 2.0
and this is a more current version. System smart enough to know it didn't
need. I just went back into the install prompt and unchecked that update,
then said don't remind me again. (we don't automatically take updates...
view each one before we take).

What update to .net Framework 1.1 are you referring to , is it KB928366? You
can run the Belarc Advisor to verify that you don't need the update :
http://www.belarc.com . There are some updates to .net Framework 1.1 that in
fact are required.

Check Event Viewer; there might be hints there as to
why the failure/s.

Maybe. Maybe not. It depends. Some, not most,
programs require it. If you DO need it, that program
will let you know with a distinct message and probably
a link to get it from. At this point it's not
essential to you. It won't be essential to the updates
either AFAIK.

Read the MS site for details; they're there. Rather
than have them install automatically, I told it to just
download them and let me decide when to install them.
That way I can do it at my liesure, and using Custom,
can view what each one is before it's installed. Handy
in the event you might not want some updates. Like
IE7, stuff like that.

The Frameworks numbers (1.1, 2.0, 3.x, etc) do not
indicate revisions as you envision them. Some apps
need 1.1 and 2.0, for instance, doesn't work. Some
sets of programs, you might have one that needs 1.1,
another that needs 2.0, etc..
It's unfortunate and dumb, but that's the case of
it. I'm one of the ones needs both 1.1 and 2.0
installed. One will not suffice for the other. The
numbers effectively make them different programs, not a
progression as you're used to seeing.
