windows explorer blocks

when I open the windows explorer.exe (windowsXP home edition) and then select
a directory for opening a file, very often the explorer blocks and I have to
deblock it with "Ctrl+Alt+Del". Also when I close the explorer all the icons
on my desktop are actuallized in some seconds.

Old network drives that are not longer reachable?
