Windows Explorer at 80-90% in CPU

Melissa

Started my computer this am and it is not booting up properly. It will not
load the desktop or allow me access to the start menu. I looked at the task
manager and the explorer.exe file (under tab processes) says CPU 80 (I've
seen up to 98) and my other computer says 00. None of my desktop icons are
loading, my start menu doesn't work and I can't access any of my quick launch
icons. It won't allow me to access my F-Secure (anti-virus program) to try
and do a scan. Anyone have any ideas??? I am using Windows Vista on an Acer
Aspire 9300 laptop.

*I unfortunately do not have a restore point. There is an option to restore
to factory default but it says there is a password and I don't have one set
and it will not let me restore.

can I use the back up disc from another computer with vista on it? like my
husband's computer? Anyways this sucks.....I'll make sure I make a back up
next time.

The only part of the computer I can access is somethng called Acer Empowering
Technology. And in that it says I have no restore point set.

do you know a way to open files without accessing the start menu? none of
my apps work - control panel is a blank page......ugh

what about using a back up disc from my hubby's comp? will it work??

Press Winkey+R. In the small window that opens type rstrui.exe, hit ENTER.
If you don't see any restore points type sfc/scannow in the Winkey+R window,
hit ENTER.

No.

Melissa, try the following by booting into safe mode (usually F8)

Thanks Bob - I also tried this pressing the winkey +R didn't work at all.
Any other suggestions??

I can NOT access my start menu and pressing Winkey +R does nothing. I'm
thinking that I'm gonna have to take it to someone to have it repaired.

Before you do that you might want to do a System Recovery which restores
your PC to factory condition. You will lose all of your files and any
programs you installed so hopefully you have backups.

Melissa, Bob is a moron., forget about that.
You have to be mote specific as to what is happening.
What happens when you try the recovery in safe mode? Can you even boot into
safe mode successfully? Post back and be as specific as you can

As Jim has asked you-

Have you tried "Safe Mode"?

Both Jim and I have posted that suggestion
and instructions.

If you are unwilling to follow the advice given, then just take
your computer some place to get it "fixed", and we will not waste
anymore time on trying to help you.

ok....no need to be bitchy...I'm NOT unwilling to take your advise. I HAVE
tried your suggestions and as I have previously stated I do not have any
restore points. My start button is not accessable, none of my files are
accessable. Nothing is different in safe mode. I was going to reset to
factory settings but there is a password on it that I did NOT put on it. I
tried the supposed factory default password and it also does not work.

I did not come on here to be talked down to like that Michael. Please no
need to be mean. I am perfectly willing to try all of your suggestions but
they just don't work.
So if it's that much of a hassle to try and help someone out then just don't
reply to the post. Thanks for all your previous suggestions (except the last
one which was just rude)

Melissa,
See if this works. When attempting a System Recovery and you are prompted
for a password just press Enter.

Ok. so when I start computer up it loads my quick launch buttons, the icons
in the task bar (network, weather eye, cogeco f-secure, messenger), but no
desktop icons. My cursor stays as the little round "waiting" symbol and I
cannot click on any of my quick launch or task bar icons nor can I click on
the start menu. It simply will not allow it.

I have started in safe mode and it does exactly the same thing. I have
tried to do the restore to last good config. but it didn't change anything -
still no access.

As I have stated before I do not have any restore points set - I didn't set
one and there wasn't one set automatically. I have tried to reset to factory
defaults and it says that there is a password. I did not set a password and
the supposed factory default password does not work.

I seem to have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I have tried all
of the suggestions on here and they don't work.

I keep getting told to do a system restore - I have no restore points.

And as I have asked before......can I use a back up from another computer?

Sorry if I seem stupid about this but I don't really know much about
computers and am nervous about messing it up more than it already is.

I appreciate any help you can give me.
