Another Case of High CPU

Now I just installed Vista this last Friday and man its it a hog... Now the
whats really messing with me is the fact that I can be sitting on my desktop
doing nothing with my cpu idle anywhere from 0 to 3% and the I just start
moving my mouse back and forth and both cores on my cpu spike anywhere from
30 to 70% I open up the task manager while I am doing this and I have 2
processes that jump up there and they are explorer.exe and csrss.exe... So my
question is why are both of these processes doing this and what can I do to
make it stop.

So long as csrss.exe originates from your system32 folder then it's fine. It
handles the creating and deleting of cpu threads.
Often when Vista is inactive it will take care of background tasks such as
defrag.
You moving the mouse *may be* vista interrupting these tasks and giving you
your resources back.

If the Vista Glass transparency is operating, at even a small mouse
movement, the OS has to reconstruct the transparency on some schedule,
likely several times the rate of the mouse movement. This takes a whale
of a lot of CPU for what seems like a minor screen construction problem.

What are you moving your mouse over? Moving mine over static wallpaper
results in no CPU increase. Moving it over this newsgroup (open in a browser)
results in CPU activity as highlights move, appear, disappear, and the icon
changes from an arrow to a hand. Moving over a static web page results in no
CPU increase. All the whiz-bang stuff comes at a cost.

Well, when I mouse over the headings, email, etc. I see an increase in CPU
usage to about 20% but not more. And as I type this, the usage can rise to
about 13%. No big deal, as it drops immediately to about 2%.

I am moving my mouse over just the plain desktop wallpaper... Now I noticed
that if I reboot it goes away but once I am up for a few hours then anytime I
move my mouse my cpu on both cores jumps right to 30% and max of about 70%..
I removed the windows glass transparency and that didn't seem to help right
away. I am going to try a couple things now...

1. Turn off hibernation clean reboot.
2. Turn off glass transparency and reboot

Hopefully one of those things will clear up this issue.

Interesting. Any third party mouse drivers installed? Sounds like you have a
memory leak somewhere if it only happens after hours of useage. What apps do
you use in those hours?

During this time I may surf the net with firefox, check my windows mail, chat
on xfire, or even play some COD4, but thats pretty much it. I am currently
using the Creative Fatal1ty 2020 Mouse with their drivers installed and I
didn't find any updated drivers for vista.

Yeah I am thinking I am having a memory leak too. Cause I am seeing that my
memory gradually increases during the day. I know it increases when you use
apps but that should drop after closing all these apps down, and its not
going back to normal. When I first start up and everything comes up I am
around 850mb being used but as the day goes on even now I am over a gig and
last night when all was said and done I was just sitting idle at 1100mb.

So after disabling hibernation with a clean boot I am still seeing the same
problem but my cpu doesn't jump as high max it goes now is 50% instead of
the 70% but thats not even on both cores its kinda odd now one core will jump
then drop the other core will jump then drop. So I am on the right path its
running a bit better but there has to be something else. Gonna disable the
glass transparency next see if that helps.

Thanks for all the responses so far I am getting there but still think I
have a couple kinks to work out.

Cool mouse. It sounds like you are on the right track. What if you plug in a
plain old USB or PS2 mouse?
