Windows Explorer and Media Player question

S

SaxPuffer

I have two things I would like info on.

1. The directory tree in the left pane of windows explorer only shows the
drives
list when I click 'My Computer'. If I close explorer and then reopen it the
drives are no longer displayed and I have to click MC again to display them.
Is there a way that I can keep the drive list open all the time ?

2. Can someone tell me how and where Media Player 10 stores the song list
file, and how I can delete it and start again with an empty list?

Many thanks

Steve

It stores it in a WMDB file in a hidden folder. The easiest way to clear
it though is simply to select all the tracks under All Music and hit the
Delete key.

Create a shortcut with the following command line:

explorer /e,/root,"My Computer"

This will open explorer (tree view) and select drive C:. automatically,
but the tree itself is rooted at the desktop, rather than My Computer.

The library itself is stored in your Local Setting folder. For example:

D:\PROFILES\Micky\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player

You'll likely find your own profile under C:\Documents and Settings.

However, you don't actually need to know the location to delete
the library. You can (and indeed should) do it from within Media
Player itself. This at least ensures Media Player is aware of the
change.

Click the main Library button, then click All Music in the tree on
the left. Unfortunatley there is no Select All option (usually CTRL+A),
so scroll to the top of list and select the first item. Now scroll to the
bottom of the list and hold SHIFT while clicking the final item.
This effectively selects everything in between.

Now hit DEL (or right-click the selection and select Delete). You
will then be offered the option of deleting the items from just the
library (recommended) or deleting the physical files as well. It's
best to show this dialog for every deletion, so you always have
the choice, therefore don't select the "Don't show this message
again" option (if you've checked it in the past, you can clear it
via Tools | Options | Library -- it would be wise to do this before
attempting to delete your library).

Either way, the library will now be empty.
