Windows Explorer always opens with folders on lh side of window

This seems to be a recent occurrence. When I open an explorer window, the right hand side seems to remember the view that I requested, but there always seems to be the "folder" list on the left hand side. I wish the system to remember that "this" particular folder should show an icon view only, without the left hand "semi-window" of the folder list!

How are opening Windows Explorer? The one paned folder view and the two
paned file explorer view are the same program (explorer.exe) using
different views to show information.

The left pane always shows "treeview." View options such as Details, List,
Tiles, apply to the right pane only.

Suggestion: Look in the standard toolbar for a "Folders" icon. Clicking
this icon will toggle the left hand column on/off.

Yes ..... but the system does not remember this change, and the next time I access this folder, the Left hand "folder" list is back again!

I'll ask again... How are you opening Explorer? Explorer is capable of
opening in either form - one pane and two paned. The "how" may be the "why"
for the behavior.

If you use a shortcut, right click on it and select Properties. What do you
see in the Target line on the Shortcut page of the property sheets?

The particular item is a shortcut on the desktop to a folder of shortcuts. I open it by "double-clicking" on the desktop icon

shortcuts. I open it by "double-clicking" on the desktop icon.

If the target line for an explorer shortcut contains the argument "/e"
then it will always open in two paned view.

Example:
%windir%\explorer.exe /e, C:\somefolder
opens Explorer with the focus on C:\somefolder and will be using the two
paned view

Change the shortcut to
%windir%\explorer.exe C:\somefolder
and the shortcut will open Explorer in "folder view" which can also be
referred to as one pane view.

PS: Changing the target to
C:\somefolder

will work for one pane view too.
