Windows Easy Transfer Companion problems

I am using a easy transfer cable from Gigaware to move programs from my XP
(SP2) based computer to my new Vista based computer using Easy Transfer
Companion. I installed the Gigaware software according to the directions.
When I run the Companion software it scans the XP computer just fine. When
it is done the screen reads "Your old computer is ready" the activity
monitor reads "Connected". It says go to your new computer and run Easy
Transfer Companion to complete the transfer. Then I run the Companion
program on the Vista computer. It also scans the computer for programs.
Everything is fine until the progress bar on the screen reaches the end. The
screen says it is scanning the computer in the "files and directories" area.
At this point it just sits and does nothing. According to the Task Manager
the program is no longer responding. I have allowed the computer to sit
untouched for up to 2 hours with the "files and directories" message on the
screen. I then have to cancel the process. I have run this process 4 times
and it has done it every time. Any help would be appreciated.

I think Easy Transfer Companion is your problem. This is a beta program and
may be buggy. Instead, I would suggest using Microsoft Windows Easy
Transfer. Here is what I suggest you do:

1. Uninstall Easy Transfer Companion from your old XP computer.

2. Download Windows Easy Transfer from this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...31-973A-45C7-A4EC-4928FA173266&displaylang=en
and install it on your old XP computer.

3. Connect your Easy Transfer Cable between the two computers.

4. On the Vista computer (which already comes with Windows Easy Transfer),
open Windows Easy Transfer by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Windows Easy Transfer.

5. Follow the prompts. I think all will go well.

Both ways of doing it are "buggy"!

Copy your Data to CD, or use a memory stick or External hard drive, and
transfer it that way.
For your settings manually redo them in vista.

Also, you can't tranfer Programs(Office, Nero, etc) from one computer to
another.
When you installed then they were spread out over different parts of your
hard drive.

You have to reinstall them from the original media.
