You don't need a domain controller to customise each User's desktop and the
software that they can use. You can easily do that in XP on stand-alone
machines.

Domains let you handle all that centrally.
Looks to me like you might have standalone PCs that are in a workgroup, you
probably have less than 10 hosts? Are they Networked at all?

What is it you want the profiles to do? Be the same on each computer the
users logon to, if thats the case you'll need roaming profiles, are you going
to have them so the users can config their own profiles or not?

You'll need a Win2003 server and licenses per connection to the server, and
a backup solution for data would be real handy.

Cheers

Well, it doesn't HAVE to be Win 2003 Server. The same thing can be
accomplished in Win2K Server.

But you will need to have a Server OS, and ideally set it up as a
Domain Controller. Before doing that, bone up on DNS, especially if
you go the 2003 Server, route, because in 2003 Domains, Active
Directory and DNS are all tied together.

Actually, you *have* to have a DC to use roaming profiles and centralized
account management.

Absolutely.
