Windows did not start successfully

Windows xp will not start successfully error message pops
up with several options in what appears to be a dos
screen. The options are to start with the previous
settings; safe mode etc. None of the options work and
when an option is chosen the computer tries to start but
ends up restarting itself and right back to the same
screen. The computer is an HP that had Windows XP already
loaded on it.

Thanks.

If you can't get into Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration, then
you're going to have to reinstall Windows. Hit F10 as the computer is
booting up and you'll get the HP Recovery program. When it's done, go
to Windows Update and reapply all security patches, reinstall any
third-party software, and restore your data from backups.
