Windows Desktop Search doesn't find anything

Is there an instruction manual anywhere for Windows Desktop Search? It
NEVER finds what I am looking for, yet the explorer search always works.
e.g. I was looking for an executable I downloaded but forgot the location.
Desktop search didn't find it, but Explorer did. How do you handle the
Outlook, Everything, Documents, etc buttons? What is their function? Under
Indexing Options I have selected all drives, all folders, all file types.
Over 300,000 items are indexed. Yet it didn't find my file.
How is it supposed to work = what am I doing wrong?

Those videos show it working in Vista, but I am using XP where practically
none of the features works that way.

I don't know what that response is supposed to mean. It doesn't
appear to search anything in XP.

I've been playing around with it today, and found that it does not
appear to index until you tell it what to index, by clicking on the
icon in the display area (not the "search desktop") and selecting
"search options". Then, click on the "search desktop" and then on the
Windows symbol, as one would do in Vista, then on "deskbar options" to
set "search as I type".
