Windows Desktop Problem

Without making any conscious changes that I'm aware of--my desktop view has
mysteriously added a left 'pane' onto the screen that cannot be closed/right
clicked-on. I can show you a screen-shot of what I'm talking about, if you'd
like. I'm interested in getting rid of that pane--in my Desktop. Also,
strangely, I cannot click on "Folder Options" in Control Panel (it does
nothing)

Ideas?
