Windows Desktop behaving like Windows Explorer with "folder tasks"

Perhaps someone can explain this because I cannot figure this out to save my
life.

For some reason the desktop has changed behavior so that the left hand
column of the screen behaves like the "Task Panel" from windows explorer.
The three sections are: Folder Tasks, Other Places and Details. As you click
on an icon on the desktop the "Details" section changes to provide more
details about that icon.

There has to be some setting somewhere that controls this behavior. This is
driving my crazy and I cannot find a way to turn it off and move back to a
normal desktop background. Much thanks in advance to anyone who know how to
solve this silly problem.

Visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP Fixes section. Follow the link for Remove Common Tasks from Desktop. This small VB Script utility will modify the System Registry to remove Common Tasks from your Desktop.
