I keep receiving error code oxc8000408. I don't know what the next step is
and I was directed to post this here, after being on another discussion forum.

Hello Ffirebird,

Just out of interest. What version of Windows are you using?

This will probably not be your solution but it is easy and can't hurt to try.

Have you performed any housecleaning etc recently like clearing out
temporary files, defrag, disk check etc

Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and
included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a
Disk CleanUp.

Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Also please confirm your system clock and Time Zone also the Date set
properly, Having it set incorrectly can cause this type of behavior.

Are you on a large, managed network, where access to AutoUpdate is
restricted?

Is there a WSUS server on the network?

What Browser are you using?

Am I correct in thinking that you are talking about XP Home?

Go ahead and download Dial-a-fix.
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Reboot into safe mºde (F-8)

Click the green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished, try Windows Update and see if you can get your
updates installed.

What error do you see in "%Windir%\WindowsUpdate.log". Please post your
windowsupdate.log file here. (last 60 lines would be enough).

Let us know what happens.

Since you haven't told us anything about your computer, operating system,
antivirus, etc. all I can suggest is that you go through the preparatory
work here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375

I tried the suggestions. I cannot get into the part to change the permissions
to SYSTEM; the computer won't let me in, although I'm the administrator.

What do I do next?

firebird07, I just want to know if youv'e checked to see if your computer
is updated : Start>All Programs>Windows Update>Custom Scan, and report
back with what you find. Ron

firebird;

Is this machine a home computer or part of a corporate network? What
permissions currently exist for system? On a home system by default SYSTEM
should have Full Control authority allowed with a check mark next to it in
the Properties panel Permissions tab.

When I follow the directions below, the windows update window opens...and
nothing happens except the window freezes and can't be closed. Nothing else
comes up...no option to open custom scan.

Can you reiterate what settings you are trying to change?

Generally, in this situation, if you ARE the admin, and you are refused
access, the way to fix this is to take ownership of the object, and then you
will be able to make the changes.

However, this way lie dragons! I don't want to suggest taking that kind of
action without being clearer what you are trying to do, and I'm short of
time to re-read the whole thread.

Bill;

Here's the reference for error 0xC8000408 which includes three potential
fixes, to which firebird is responding:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=323721

But from his response so far, I'm quite surprised that on a home
machine... if that is one, that SYSTEM wouldn't have full control. It
seems to me that unless it had full control authority there wouldn't be any
possibility to let less privileged users initiate Windows Defender scans,
approve actions, and update definitions. That's why I asked about the
machine's use and if it was part of a corporate network where such
activities might be controlled elsewhere, particularly when Windows Updates
seems non-functional for his admin authority account too, perhaps I'm
missing something?

To be clear...it is a laptop with Windows Vista, purchased less than a year
ago, and with security problems from day one. Within the first 3 months,
they had to take it back and reset the operating system to where it was when
I purchased it. I rarely use it at home, and must use Internet cafes as I
travel from two locations,mostly.

What I need is a step by step instruction to update the malware--I am leery
of the "taking ownership" thingy, since I don't completely understand it.
But, on the last attempt to follow the suggestions here, I went in and got
stopped cold when tried to do a custom scan--everything just froze on a
blank screen.

To be even clearer, WD does scan--but keeps giving me the message that I
have no malware protection and when I try to update, well, that's where this
thread started.

firebird07, I've tried but youv'e lost me for anymore fix's. But i feel it's
not a defender problem anymore with you not being able to update your
computer,
i think your problem lies elsewhere. BTW When you have a problem and you
post a question you shouldn't take so long to answer back. Good Luck
