I am encountering an error message when I try to check for update as it is
telling me to (I am connected through LAN) - The program can't check for
definition updates.

Error found: Code 0x80240029

What does this mean? Thanks.

Apparently, Defender relies on Windows Updates to do it's updating for it,
and it won't do it on it's own when told to.

To do it manually:

- Go to Windows update.
- Click on change settings (on the left).
- Check "never check for updates."
- Remove any other checks (Recommended update and any other).
Then go back to Defender and run the Updates again.

Other than that, you can leave it up to Windows Updates to do it.
