Windows Defender

I recently downloaded a "free" spyware programe named "Defenza." When run,
it said I had numerous cookies and other spyware, but to remove the problems
I would have to register and pay for the program (which I declined to do).

I then downloaded Windows Defender, Beta 2 and installed it. When run, it
found only one bad file and allowed me to remeove it. I'm wondering if
Defenza was just a slick way to get me to buy the program, Windows Defender
is not very effective, or what... Anybody out there know about this???

You guessed it. There are dozens of these programs that try to con you into purchasing. They will usually install more spyware than they remove.

Kudos for not falling for the con.

What can be a frightener, is if you happen to go to a bad site and all of a
sudden, your screen is plastered with 'scare warnings' that you have been
infected with this and that. Dont panic - be calm and don't flash your
cursor all over the place, and delete them with care.
Some put the crap into your system and then ask for money to get rid of it.
