Windows Defender will not perform scheduled scans

Here's my problem - I schedule a Windows Defender Quick Scan to run
every Wednesday at 12:00 PM, and 12:00 comes and it does not run. It
doesn't give any error messages or anything it just does not run. I've
tried changing the days, times that it ran, and it still doesn't run.
The box that says "Scan Now" is grayed out, but you are able to click
on the scan button on the main toolbar and perform a scan.
Here's some info on our current setup:

Netware 6.0 Environment.
We are rolling out 70 new identical XP Pro SP2 PCs to our users. The
PCs were imaged using ZENWorks 6.5. The CORE image was taken from an
identical (hardware & software) PC - then the image was pushed out via
the ZEN imaging server to the 69 other PCs we are rolling out. We have
also setup these users with only USER rights - that's how we would like
it to stay if possible. We have also applied the compatws.inf security
template for a legacy app (unfortunately) via Local Policy and then
pushed it out with ZEN desktop management. Windows Defender definitions
are updated using WSUS, which works just fine. Any help would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

Hello Brad,

Is the Task Scheduler disabled under services? Microsoft Antispyware
schedules as a hidden task using the Windows Scheduled tasks facility--so
Task Scheduler needs to be availªble.

Scheduled scans are done via the Windows Scheduled tasks facility. Go to
Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Scheduled tasks.

In the menu at the top, choose Advanced, View hidden tasks and Notify me of
missed tasks.

You should see an entry for MP Scheduled Scan. If you right click this
entry, and choose to run it--what happens?

I too have the same issue. I opened the control panel, scheduled tasks, and
non of the scheduled tasks are running. Then I looked ar Microsoft support
for "scheduled tasks could not start", found a blip that stated the password
had to be set, so I set it and an error. An error has occurred while
attempting to set task account information. The specific error is:
0x8007007a: The data area passsed to a system call is too small. Searched
for 0x8007007a and found a hot fix is out, but I am going to wait for the
service pack.

Hi Engel,

Yes, Task Scheduler was Disabled. After re-enabling that service and making
sure all of its dependencies were running, I tried scheduling another scan.
The scan failed to run and logged the following in the Log File:

"Task Scheduler Service"
Started at 7/10/2006 10:34:11 AM
"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe) 7/10/2006 10:52:07 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8007000d: The data is invalid.
"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe) 7/10/2006 11:00:00 AM ** ERROR **

therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.

"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe) 7/10/2006 11:58:07 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.

"MP Scheduled Scan.job" (MpCmdRun.exe) 7/10/2006 11:58:30 AM ** ERROR **
The attempt to retrieve account information for the specified task failed;
therefore, the task did not run. Either an error occurred, or no account
information existed for the task.
The specific error is:
0x8007000d: The data is invalid.
[ ***** Most recent entry is above this line ***** ]

I also tried right clicking the Task as you mentioned earlier and chose Run
– the result was the same.

I have tried this scenario as a USER and as Local Admin with the same
result. When I try accessing the Properties of the task, I receive the
following error notification popup:

Task Scheduler
General page initialization failed.
The specific error is:
0x800700d: The Data is invalid.
An error occurred attempting to retrieve task account information. You may
continue editing this object, butwill be unable to change task account
information.

This happens on all of the new Imaged PCs, but it does not happen on the
CORE Master PC. I am able to run the task normally on it.

Thanks again for your help,

Brad

Problem solved.

Some how the MP Scheduled Scan file became corrupt and unusable, so I copied
the known good file from the CORE master PC to a network location. I then
copied the good file to the Scheduled Task folder in the Control Panel of the
Workstations in question. Once the good file was there I could edit the
properties of the file. Our setup required me to edit the “Run as:†option
in the MP Scheduled Scan file – we needed to run the Task as Admin and set
the local Admin password so the Task would run. Defender now runs its tasks
as scheduled.

Thanks Engel for pointing out that Defender requires Task Scheduler, and
that the service needs to be enabled.

Just thought I'd add that I had error 0x8007000d when trying to access my scheduled tasks on an XP machine. Eventually found a microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822904/en-us which I followed and which corrected the problem. It seems to be a problem with PCs which have been imaged.
