Windows Defender Updating problem

Brian Murphy

Thank you. This worked for me. I now have the version updated through
2/15/05 and a green status. Have there been def. updates after this version
that I am still not getting?

Can y'all try:

Open Windows Explorer

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Right-click on AS_Sigs.MSI and choose Uninstall from the context menu

Or

Open the command prompt

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Execute the following command: msiexec /x AS_Sigs.msi

Check for updates

I agree that it has the smell of a bug.

The two repair options are still there in add or remove programs:

Start, control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender--either
choose change, then update, or click on support information and choose
repair.

I'd try those for this issue--maybe try repair first--I've never heard
what the difference is between the choices.

You are current as of the time I am writing. There's not much history yet
with Windows Defender. With the beta1 Microsoft Antispyware, updates were
typically roughly a week apart, except in exceptional circumstances--there
were quick turnarounds where false postives were involved.

I just installed the new Windows Defender Beta 2 that Microsoft just
released. Well I installed it and the program updated just fine, well
then I
thought the program was messing up something so I uninstalled it. Then
I
reinstalled Defender and I can't even update, it's saying "there are
not any
denfinitions or engine updates available" which I know isn't true. I
need
help to figure out and correct this issue. If anyone can help me I
would
really appreciate it.

Thanks

This was the problem for me as well, once I did as Mike H suggested all is
well.

I got it to update with WSUS. I had to include Windows Defender in Products
and Definition Updates in Update Classifications under Synchronization
Options. I did a Synchronization to get the update.

GREAT!! THANKS, I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR MONTHS TO TRY SOLVING THIS UPDATE PROBLEM AFTER RE-INSTALLING DEFENDER BETA 2. THEN AFTER FOLLOWING YOUR SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS ALL'S WORKING PERFECT AGAIN. I HAD PREVIOUSLY TRIED ALL SORTS OF EDITING / DELETING FOLLOWING OTHERS ADVICE BUT THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THING THAT HAS WORKED. IF YOUR HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AS ME, FOLLOW THIS & IT SHOULD SOLVE YOUR UPDATE ERRORS AFTER REINSTALLING DEFENDER.

''If you update after the first defender install it creates a reg key with the signature version. The installer does remove the key if you uninstall defender. So if you reinstall defender w/o removing the key, defender thinks you have the latest update''.
Its a reg key like this one:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInstallerProducts90A2CC5A3D9EC E9429D33078B4DBC4C2

(JUST DELETE THE ABOVE KEY AND RESTART DEFENDER - SEE!! IT WORKS )
