Windows Defender Updating problem

G

Guest

I just installed the new Windows Defender Beta 2 that Microsoft just
released. Well I installed it and the program updated just fine, well then I
thought the program was messing up something so I uninstalled it. Then I
reinstalled Defender and I can't even update, it's saying "there are not any
denfinitions or engine updates available" which I know isn't true. I need
help to figure out and correct this issue. If anyone can help me I would
really appreciate it.

Thanks

It is possible that you might need to wait for another update to fix this.

I agree that it has the smell of a bug.

The two repair options are still there in add or remove programs:

Start, control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender--either
choose change, then update, or click on support information and choose
repair.

I'd try those for this issue--maybe try repair first--I've never heard what
the difference is between the choices.

Well I tired to click "change" in add/remove programs and did a Maintenance
repair, and then tried to update again but I still get "Windows Defender has
no definitions or engine updates available" bubble from the taskbar. I guess
I'll just have to go back to Antispyware Beta 1, and use it's up to date
definitions. Man this sticks, and now I don't like defender all that much
anymore! How can you like a program if it won't work?

I did this and it works:

- deinstall windows defender
- delete all windows defender files and folders
- start regedit and search for "defender" an delete all founded keys
- reinstall windows defender

Should update now.

Can y'all try:

Open Windows Explorer

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Right-click on AS_Sigs.MSI and choose Uninstall from the context menu

Or

Open the command prompt

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Execute the following command: msiexec /x AS_Sigs.msi

Check for updates

Steve,

I attempted to resolve it per your recommendation however it wasnt
successful. I was able to resolve the issue by executing the mentioned .msi
package. Then I was able to update Defender as expected. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Frank

If you delete really all keys it works. If you update after the first
defender install it creates a reg key with the signature version. The
installer daoes not remove the key if you uninstall defender. So is you
reinstall defender w/o removing the key defender thinks you have the latest
update.

Its a reg key like this one:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\90A2CC5A3D9ECE9429D33078B4DBC4C2

Jeez - granted it's a beta but for Pete's sake is it too much to ask for
basic functionality? MSFT should provide downloadable updates in the
meantime.

Here's the only thing that work for me:

Go directly to the folder \Program Files\Windows Defender
Run (double-click) AS_Sigs.MSI

That's it. (When I tried to Uninstall AS_Sigs.MSI as Steve Dodson suggested
I got a message claiming that it wasn't installed, that's why I tried this.)

Steve,

I tried following your directions, but it didn't work. I ran AS_Sigs.msi and
tried updating but it still didn't work. Are the updates for the beta coming
through Windows updates? We use WSUS, but I couldn't find any updates for
Windows Defender that had been downloaded.

After installing Windows Defender Beta2 this morning it kept saying that my
signature files were out of date.

I tried some of the suggestions listed in earlier posts in this group but
nothing worked.

I decided to check out Microsoft Update and there the new signatures were.
I downloaded and installed them and all is good!

The updates are availble through Windows Update. I've seen reports in these
groups of successful distribution via WSUS, I believe.

I got it to update with WSUS. I had to include Windows Defender in Products
and Definition Updates in Update Classifications under Synchronization
Options. I did a Synchronization to get the update.

Here are alternative things to try.

1) go to Windows or Microsoft Update, and see if sig updates are offered.
2) Go into the IE settings for your connection and look for the
"automatically detect" setting for proxy servers. Check this if unchecked,
uncheck it if checked. See whether that changes the behavior. Don't leave
it unchecked if it is required in your environment!

issue.
