windows defender taking more cpu time

1)I have a toshiba laptop (p4)with windows xp home sp2. when I scan the
laptop with windows def(msmpeng.exe) ,it is taking 30--50% of my cpu and
freezing the computer.
2)when i click the stop button while windows def is scanning getting a error
message "0x80070057"

Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1410.10

try download the new version, is now 1.1.1347.0, and see of the same is
