Windows Defender not scanning

G

Guest

I recently installed Defender and have it scheduled to run at 2am every day.
My log does not show that this is scanning. Can I do anything to solve this
please bear in mind I am a novice and a step by step guide would be most
useful. By the way it runs manually even a quick scan does not show the log.
Can anyone help please???????

I have the same problem. I have a scan scheduled for 4:00 am daily but WD
isn't scanning unless I keep the widow open all the time. With the old
Microsoft Sptware program a small target shaped icon was installed in the bar
at the lower right of my desktop so I knew the program was active even when I
closed the window used for set up and reporting. With WD, the little castel
icon isn't there and only appears when I go into START, PROGRAMS and open WD
in a new window. Also, I don't get a scan report every morning like with the
old program whch make me think it isn't scanning.

Do I have to leave this WD window open all the time to make WD work??

Thanks for any help.

What OS are you on... There are known problems with the task scheduler and
W2K, but first ensure that task scheduler is an automatically started
service in Local Services. To be really sure if the scan is running go to
your Event Viewer for System Events and look at what happened during the
correct time period for the scan. My automatic scan looks like this in the
Viewer:

Windows Defender scan has started.

Scan ID: {2173180B-ED08-47B3-8DD3-C39959999DB7}

Scan Type: AntiSpyware

Scan Parameters: Quick Scan

User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

No, the defender GUI does not need to be open for WD to work. You can have
the castle icon on the notification area (taskbar) always show by checking
that option on the WD options settings page, be sure to use the Scroll Bar
to see all the options. If you have "apply default actions to items
detected during a scan" checked, I don't believe you get a scan report.

THANKS Dave M for your help.

I have WXP Home. I opened WD and added the castle icon to my taskbar and
also unchecked "apply default actions" so I will get a report on what was
found.

I would like to be sure that the scan is actually running buit your advice
to "go to
your Event Viewer for System Events and look at what happened during the
correct time period for the scan." is all greek to me. What is my "Event
Viewer", how do I get to it to look for "System Events"???

Thanks again!

In Windows Defender there's not a unique log of activity only for WD,
instead it's mixed in with the other system events. So do this:
Look at your Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer > System > View >
Filter on Event source: WinDefend

Another way to get there is right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer

And even another Start > Run > type "eventvwr.msc", hit "OK"

You're lost in Windows Defender without being able to find this log of
Events. I suspect your automatic scan is running since your not on Win2K,
that System Event Log will tell you without question.

I checked my event viewer and there are are no scan showing to be running at
2am logged unless I missed something! I saw a lot warning messages against
WD incidentally I checked my task schedule and notiecd that against WD it
shows that it has never run! If that means anything to anyone. Please bear
with me I am not an expert with PCs. Can anyone help solve this issue Is
there a way round this apart from running manually and are Microsoft aware of
this problem??? More importantly can anyone give an idiots guide to help
resolve this????

I also Scheduled events and for sime reason did a run command on MP
scheduled scan, the result of this is that everytime I boot my PC I keep
getting messages saying one your scheduled etct etc etc did not run or work!
how do I get rid of this pop up everytime I log on

THANKS Dave,

I checked my "Events" and yes WD is running as scheduled.

Good luck to you badru12; I hope someone will help you as Dave has helped
me. Now if only all the other posts didn't indicate that WD isn't detecting
much anyway...

Hi
Now if only all the other posts didn't indicate that WD isn't detecting
much anyway...

WD detects a lot but maybe it´s time to really discuss
different user types/groups.

For a "normal" user, with "normal" surfing habits and "normal" mailings
WD is excellent with also a working antivirus program and updated PC.

For a user which visits risky sites, prOn-FreeXXX, p2p,
warez, hackz, crackz, serialz "free" gambling etc this is a major risk.

It´s a total mess today within cleaning forums.... 2 examples !!!

http://www.castlecops.com/f67-Hijackthis_Spyware_Viruses_Worms_Trojans_Oh_My.html

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html

"Bless this mess".....

It must openly be a discussion about "risky sites". No "mumble" about
it. "The bad guys" will "eat" a lot of users......and it´s "mission
impossible" to protect a user which frequently visiting this "mess".

Maybe it´s embarrasing to discuss Free XXX sites or p2p.... with "ugly
banners" and prepared malicious junkfiles.

Who knows....?!

This is one of the most helpful posts I've seen on this forum (and I've seen
some good ones!). It seems to me that this is crucial information
(particularly the instruction to 'filter' - but why on earth is something so
important so inaccessible? Why isn't there a 'Defender log' button?

Microsoft... Joe Faulhaber, Bill Sanderson, or someone? If we needed an
update button, then surely we need a Defender log button? I'd never have
found my way to this without the help given here. And it's crucial to be able
to check these events.

J balester or Dave M

Can you PLEASE provide me with an idiots guide as I have not been able to
follow the instructions given to JB fully. If Jbalester has managed to get
his to work then I am sure I can too just need a bit more detailed guidance
please. I am new to all this.

Hi badru12;
If your on WinXP Pro the automatic scan should be working, unless there's a
problem with the System Task Scheduler which Windows Defender uses.

First make sure the Scheduler is started and enabled. Right click My
Computer pick Manage > Services and Applications > Services > Scroll to
Task Scheduler and Highlight it > Right Click select Properties > make sure
the Startup type is Automatic in the drop down list on the General tab > if
not pick it then click Apply then click OK.

If the Task Scheduler is not in Status: Started at this point, right click
it and choose Start.

Now go to Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Advanced > pick View Hidden
Tasks
You should see MP Scheduled Scan on the Schedule to run at 2:00 AM
Right Click the MP Scheduled Scan and pick Run... What Happens if you open
Windows Defender do you now have a running scan?

Dave I carried out your instructions, when I right click MP schedule scan.
WD performed a quick scan, I take it this has solve the problem? Thank you
very much Dave for your help much appreciated.

I am running Windows Defender on Windows 2000 at it fails to start
automatically but runs fine if started manually. I have looked at the list
of scheduled events and WD is not amongst them. Automatic update is working
fine and I have the latest version.
Any ideas?

There is currently a problem with autoscan using System Task Manager and
Win2000. Microsoft is aware of this problem, and we believe they are
working on a fix. Until a fix comes out, you'll have to scan manually...
recommendation is that you run just a quick scan which takes a few minutes
and should not be disruptive to multi-tasking.

I have monitoring my aurun on WD and it has not run for the past 2 days, the
time was set at 2am. Despite me following your instructions everything set
up to automatic (task scheduler) any suggestions please

badru12,

Is your PC set to go to stand-by or hibernate after a few hours? If so, the
Defender scheduled task isn't designed to 'wake' it from stand-by and it
can't be awakened from hibernation.

If your PC is 'off' in the morning, this might be the problem.

Good idea, Bitman. Badru12, just for a test, set it to run autoscan on the
next hour while your online and see if it takes off. A quick scan should
only take a few minutes to run.
