I had Windows Defender and had the icon by the clock. Now the icon is no
longer there. How do I get it back? Any suggestions please?

Two things to try - one is a Defender issue, and the other is an XP issue.:

1. Open Defender, select Tools, then Options. Scroll down to a point just
before where it says 'Advanced options'. Check that there's a dot in the box
labelled 'Always'. If there is a tick already there, temporarily tick the
other one ('Only if Windows Defender detects an action to take'), and then
tick 'Always' again. Now click on the SAVE button at bottom right. You should
get your icon back again.

2. There's a weird bug in XP that seems to make it sometimes forget your
settings for the notification area (system tray) down there at bottom right,
and sometimes icons hide themselves even though they shouldn't. So -
right-click on a blank section of the taskbar at the bottom, and select
Properties. Click the 'customize' button, and check that the Defender icon
(under 'Current items') is set to 'always show'. Then click OK and you're
done.

Hope one of them helps.

I have the same thing. As what xwolftrax said, I tried doing both things as
he said and neither of them works. I am running Windows Vista x32 which
Windows Defender came with. I cannot reinstall this via the Windows Defender
website, nor can I delete this. Can someone help me with this?!? This is SOOO
frustrating when I can't even see whether Windows Defender is scanning or
whatever it might be doing. I don't even know if something changed in my
Registry or somewhere else on my PC causing the icon to not show up in the
system tray (the one that's next to my clock). Help me, anyone, PLEASE!!!

Are you sure that your antivirus application has not disabled Windows
Defender?

Nope, it still runs, no matter what. My antivirus program (McAfee
SecurityCenter) does not affect this.

Some versions of McAfee definitely disable Windows Defender and create
exactly the symptoms you are describing. McAfee Security Center does not
describe the version precisely, I think--what do you see in control panel,
programs, with Mcafee's name on it?

All I see in the Programs and Features list (list of installed programs)
(Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features) is just McAfee SecurityCenter.
There are no others listed here as McAfee.
