Windows Defender does not start

After installing Windows Defender on Windows 2000 (SP4 and GDI+ are present)
we get the following error:

Status
Starting services

Error 1920.Service (WindDefender) service failed to start. Verify that you
have sufficient privileges to start system services.

Then the installation has to be abandoned.

So Microsoft, as I am logged in as Adminstator and can get no higher, do I
call Mr Gates for permission ?

Correction of this error would be appreciated.

Thankyou Jane.

That did indeed resolve the issue. Before simply installing the GDI+
library, I had actually searched microsoft.com for "security rollup" for w2k
sp4, but didnt get any finds. When I eventually found it I noted that it is
indexed under "update rollup".

Incidentally I am absolutely certain that the installation failure of
WinDefender also removed the "ClientProtocols" keys for Outlook from the
Win2k registry. I don't know whether anyone else has had that happen before.

Anyway once again many thanks. I'll buy you a virtual drink sometime.

Ken.

Can you suggest what the symptoms would be of this Outlook issue? There
have been some Outlook related issues posted, but no technical detail--so
I'd love to know a little more about your observations on this.

Bill,

Before answering your question, let me explain a few background events.

1. I tried installing Windefender onto a W2k w/s after a succsseful
installation on a WXPPro w/s.
2. I had to install W2kSP2 and GDI+ initially.
3. I was using a non-admin a/c at first (as a result of not using admin a/cs
for everyday use!)
4. I then used an admin a/c and got the error stated when I opened this
thread.

However, the non-admin a/c seemed to be damaged by WinDefender and I got the
message " ... policy of this system does not allow you to log on
interactively ...".
I fiddled and diddled at the domain controller, but in the end recreated the
a/c.

Then, on the Win2k w/s I couldn't connect Outlook to the Exchange server -
it couldn't be found. No a/c could hit Exchange in Outlook on that w/s. Then
I discovered the missing Outlook ClientProtocols registry keys. I rebuilt
them manually from another PC and from the MS Knowledgebase and then all
Outlook access to Exchange was fine.

Then I followed JaneM's mush-appreciated lead and now all is well.

So there you are - what a saga.

Thanks--I don't know what went on there, but there are a number of things
that should not have happened, clearly.

I've offices that run as limited users, but not on Windows 2000.

Thanks for laying that out clearly. I haven't seen other reports that
parallel it, but I hope the Microsoft folks reading will ponder it and maybe
do some testing.

I suspect you are replying to an ancient message, but in case anyone
wonders, Windows Defender is supported only on Windows XP and Vista.
