Windows defender does not start on bootup

I have 1 PC and 2 laptops all running vista home premium 32 bit. Since down
loading the up date Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597
(Definition 1.53.638.0)

Installation date: ‎16/‎03/‎2009 17:55
All 3 computers will not boot defender on startup. When I click on defender
in my program list I get a pop up saying it is turned off with the option to
turn it on.
Once turned on it runs fine.
Iam running Norton internet sec 2009 and up to now have had no problems with
this.
I have just down loaded the latest update KB915597 (definition 1.55.314.0)
which instaled fine .
Any help would be warmly welcome...

I also see this problem which seems to occurr after startup and I've noticed
ever since I upgraded Norton 360 to Version: 3.0.0.135.

I am currently running with Windows Defender Definition version 1.55.736.0

I think it is highly likely that this is intentional, and caused by
Symantec/Norton. I'd suggest looking for confirmation in their support
forums.

The 2009 McAfee, Norton, Symantec, etc. anti-malware suite product for
Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows Defender to improve system
performance. Windows Vista users who have installed these products should not
enable Windows Defender

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \ msconfig),

or if you wanna enable Windows Defender, go (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and
then turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender)

Thanks for all help this problem now seems to have cleared it's self can only
think that 1 it was sorted by a defender update or 2 a norton update but all
is fine now.
once again thanks to all who replyed with help.

Sorted my problem by reverting back to Norton 360 Version 1 after not very
satisfactory answer from Symantec. There seems to be a number of replies
suggesting this behaviour is intentional.

Didn't like Version 3 of Norton 360 as apart from very frequent searches for
new updates (every 5 - 15 minutes) which slowed PC it would also start Full
system scans at random times which couldn't seem to be stopped and slowed
machine virtually to a stop. Ah well subject for a new thread in a different
forum I guess.

Thanks to all who took the time and trouble to respond.
