Windows Defender (Beta2)

I am having problems updating definition files for my Windows Defender (Beta
2). It tells me that definition files have not been updated for 14 days.

This happened last month, so I removed the program, downloaded the file
again and re-installed the program. It has run fine now for the past few
weeks. Then today I get this same message again.

I went to Windows Update, ran express search for needed updates, and it gave
me the latest update for the Windows Defender. I downloaded and installed
the update, and then received this message.

"An auto start change was made to a known application file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\advpack.dll."

And then it tells me that the definition files have still not been updated.

I went back to Microsoft update, ran the Express search again, and guess
what?? It AGAIN tells me I need the latest definition files for Windows
Defender.

OK, I install them again, and get the same message.

So, now what I need to know is how many times do I have to do this for it to
work? Or is there something else I need to do. It doesn't make any sense
using a program that won't update properly.

Thank you for any help you can provide,

Try the following. It has worked for me in the past.

Click on the Start Button
Click on Run
Type in the following command in the Run Text Box

Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Click OK

Answer the halt that comes up with Yes

Open Windows Defender
Go to the Help Options (little down arrow next to the ? mark
Click on About Windows Defender
Click the Check For Updates button.

It should download now.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
I did as you suggested, but the installation never happened. Instead I
received this message.

"This instalation package could not be opened. Veryify that the package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
veryify that this is a valid Windows install package."

I'm afraid I don't understand or how to change/fix this.

(love you name btw. Busy plantin vegies myself right now too)

Well Sandie, I'm sorry it didn't work. If you look at some of the other posts
here in the NewsGroup you might find the answer. I have had to use the
procedure that I suggested to you for along time now. I just run the Msiexec
run command and then update. Sorry. Hope you find your solution to the
problem that you are having. Good luck. Keep those vegies growing.

Believe me, I have tried all the solutions mentioned. The Msiexec was the
only one that worked and continues to do so. Have a good day.

Hello Sandielynne,

Have a look at this article. It may be relevant to your problem.

Thank you Engel,

Your suggestion was totally relevant, and it worked. Now I will know what
to do if this happens again too. But I hope it doesn't come to that. I
appreciate your help so much.

I haven't had a chance to read it, since I have been wasting the past hour
trying to update WD! But I have a good idea as to what he might be talking
about. I was expereincing the "14 days without updates" syndrome myself.

First I tried: Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Then Windows Install Cleanup, Control Panel's Add/Remove, and finally WD's
own uninstall. All *APPEAR* to remove the program successfully, but each
time I attempt a fresh reinstall WD appears to "take". Unfortunately, when I
attempt to run WD, I get nefty errors such as MSASCui.EXE unable to locate
.... application failed to start because MSVCR80.DLL was not found.
Reinstalling the app may fix the problem.

Anyone care to guess how many installations might be required? Perhaps it
is discussed in the article. ;-)

Any fresh ideas on this one?

Hi Scott,

from Steve Dodson (MSFT)

If you are seeing an error message stating MSVCR80.DLL is missing, please
delete c:\program files\windows defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest and let me
know if this resolves the issue
