Windows Defender (Beta 2) keeps freezing up

For about the last 3 weeks, anytime I run Defender, full or quick scan, it
starts to scan and then always freezes on the same file. The file it freezes
on is: Program files/Common files/Microsoft
Shared/Shoebox/Standard.SBT->/14284

I have no idea why it's doing this. My definitions are up to date. When
the Defender freezes it essentially locks down my entire computer.
Everything freezes up and I can't do anything. After waiting for about 10
minutes I usually manually reboot.

If anyone could help me out, it would be a big help. Thanks.

hi bb;

If your comfortable with that file and where it came from... I'm figuring
Ms, but not familiar with that specific application... then I'd just
exclude it from your scan process in WD options. Since you know the file
involved it's just a matter of going to the Options box labeled "Do not
scan these files or locations:", and navigating to that file with the Add
button. I personally have about 20 such excludes for various reasons most
of which involve alerts that I don't need to see for applications that I
trust.

Do you by chance have MS Works Suite and/or Picture It on your computer? I
believe these programs use very large archive-type files in Program
files/Common files/Microsoft Shared/Shoebox, e.g., standard.sbs in that
folder holds clipart, and may be well over 100,000KB, causing Defender to
possibly choke. You could try having Defender not scan the contents of
archived files in Tools > Options, or like Dave suggested, have Defender
ignore the folder altogether.

Too, you might want to download the latest version of Defender, since it's
now out of Beta and gone "gold", and see how the new version handles that
folder:

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info Dean. I went into the options and blocked Defender from
scanning that particular folder. It seemed to work. I also updated defender
to the "gold" version. So it may have been like you said...that the archive
was so big that it froze up. Thanks.

Defender doesn't seem to be alone in having problems scanning the archive
type files in that folder. Several Anti-Spyware/Anti-Virus scanners have
been reported to have had problems with it, too. If you Google "Program
files/Common files/Microsoft Shared/Shoebox", you'll come up with a number
of forums that have discussed this issue, where posters, using various
products, note that their particular scanner freezes when it hits that
folder.

Glad to have helped,
Dean
