Problem running Windows Defender scan

My husband and I have recently been having some trouble with our internet
running slow, so we decided to download Windows Defender to check for
Spyware. Unfortunately, every time we try to run the scan, it starts up fine
but then gets stuck on a particular file. Here is the file name:
Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Shoebox\standard.SBT->/15021

Any idea what this is and/or why we keep having this problem? We have not
been able to complete a scan; instead we have to force close the program. In
the meantime, our internet is still running slow (although a little better
than before we downloaded Defender).

Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some scans can take a lengthy amount of time. Are you running a quick scan,
or a full?

If you are attempting a full scan, I'd run a quickscan first. Lets see if
that goes through OK.

If it does, I would relax a good bit--it should catch malware in place,
assuming that you also have up to date antivirus software in place and have
scanned with it.

If you still want to run a full scan, set it to go at the end of the day, or
whatever period will allow for it to run for some hours. Lets see if it
isn't hung, just slow..

That file belongs to PictureIt! which is loaded with MS Works. It can be
very large.

We tried both the quick and the full scan, and each time we got stuck on the
same file. We let the computer run for HOURS--at least 4 hours, maybe
more--and no progress was made in that time. Surely this can't be normal???

It could be normal. I find it curious that a file associated with PictureIt
would be scanned in a quickscan, but I'm only vaguely remembering what that
application is all about.

If you shut down PictureIt and any processes associated with it before
scanning, can you do a quickscan? Otherwise, I'd reiterate my
recommendation to try overnight.

To my knowledge, we've never even used PictureIt (or anything else from
Microsoft Works, for that matter!), so how do we shut it down?

The exact same problem (ie, getting stuck on this file) has occurred
repeatedly on both the quick scan and the full scan. Like I said, it's not
just slow, there is NO progress being made in the scan during this time.
Furthermore, the mouse functions erratically and the computer is slow to
respond, and we've had to do a force-quit ever single time.

Hello toaster.

Further to Bill and Bob.

Suggest cleaning up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and
included all offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a
Disk CleanUp.

Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Try running the following in

Start -> Run -> type cmd

in command prompt, type

ipconfig /flushdns

You should be get
“Windows IP Configurationâ€
“Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.â€

- Done! You Window DNS cache has just been flush.
To exit, type EXIT

Perhaps some HD maintenance, try running the "chkdsk /r" command at the
command prompt, also Defrag the HD

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

chkdsk /r

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

To Defrag
Open My Computer and right-click on the C: drive. Select Properties, then
click on the Tools tab and select Defragment Now...

Reboot into Safe Mode (F-8)

Run a scan with Windows Defender

Good luck and let us know how it works out..............

Thanks for the detailed response! I will try the things you suggested, but
just to clarify, are you suggestions specifically to address the Defender
issue or to more generally address our internet slowing problem? Regarding
the latter, we haven't performed all of the steps that you suggested, but we
have done Disk Cleanup several times, and the last time we attempted to do
Defrag, it said it wasn't necessary (because we had already done that
recently as well).

Thanks,
Beth

I understand that it appears that no progress is happening. It has been a
long time since I have seen this symptom in person, but I would still
suggest letting it run--obviously, this will need to be at a time when you
don't need to use the machine for a lengthy period.

It is possible that there is a deadlock of some sort, but I think there are
usually clearer symptoms for that--an error message.

I can't easily give useful advice about PictureIT, I think. You might run
task manager (start, run, taskmgr <and hit enter> and see what tasks show
that are initiated by the current user that you could see that might be
Works related, and end-task them.

Scan activity is logged in the System events log. It might be worth looking
there to see if anything of interest is logged. From your reports, I would
expect to see a log entry for the start of the scan, followed by the triplet
of Eventlog entries that denote a restart.
Maybe there will be some other information about the scan, though. Filter
the System Events log on "windefend" I believe.

Start, run, eventvwr.msc <hit enter> is a quick way to get to the event
viewer.

If you find an event related to these scans, double click on it to open it
and there is a button to paste the details to the clipboard, which would
allow you to paste that information back into a message here.
