Windows Defender Balloon for Manual Update

I have two home pc's - one of them shows a balloon when trying to manually
update - the other does not. Can anyone tell me how to turn the balloon on
for the second pc? I have balloon tips "enabled", but there is not
notification by the WD icon when manually updating. Appreciate any help on
this.

1. Goto Control Panel
2. Click Folder Options (in the classic view)
3. Click the View tab
4. Check off Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items option
5. Click OK

see if you have this on choose when WD should notify you about an action to
take

also in WD see if you have in Options a check next to (check for defintions
updates before scanning)
and also one in choose when the windows defender can appear in the
notification area- I have the firs tone checked.

Robin - thanks for reply - tried all the suggestions - still no balloon on
the one pc when manually updating WD. Appreciate the try - guess I will just
live with it the way it is - not a big issue, but it just makes me feel more
secure knowing that it is checking, etc. Thanks again.

Try tweak # 11 on this page:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

You may need to experiment--disable, and then enable, with or without
reboots--not sure what's needed.

Once you get the tips going, they are sometimes SURE to be behind something
else--that's a genuine bug (or at least design limitation)--that there is no
simple fix for.

Robin and Bill - thanks for your responses on this - I have now found that
it was my action which caused the balloons to not appear. I had customized
the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties for Windows Defender to "always hide".
Once I checked "hide when inactive, the balloons reappeared. Sometimes i
make changes which I don't really realize what the consequences will
be................but maybe i learn something - lol.

Thanks for posting that--I hadn't realized that hiding the icon also hides
the balloon notifications. I'd recommend going into Tools Options in
Windows Defender, and scrolling down, and setting the option to display the
tray icon only when a user response is needed. That should accomplish what
you want--no icon most of the time, but clear visibility for any alerts.
