Windows Defender. AM I being Dumb?

Windows Defender is blocking some legitimate startup programs. I have
been into Software Explorer, but the Enable button is disabled (normal and
admin users). How on earth do I enable a program to launch on start,
after Windows Defender had butted in, because "it knows best". I am
tempted to simply disable WIndows Defender if it carries on this
attitude...

When you get this warning, is there an icon in the
systray that normally isn't there? If so, the next
time this happens, right click that icon and you should
see something that says "run blocked program" and then
it should show you which program it is. Click it and the warning
should go away.

I don't know why you can't do this from inside Windows
Defender.

I have the same situation with AVG - ENABLE button is disabled - I like
Vista, I really do - BUT this is just plain stupid - IMHO. Please let me
decide what runs and what doesn't run.

"WIndows Defender if it carries on this attitude..." great line )

I've often wondered why they even have the enable button, because it never
works. None of the buttons, in fact, are working, and when you go to the tab
titled "allowed programs", nothing is listed, even though programs are
allowed. There is just no user control at all, it seems. This has been true

I have tried everything that is suggested on these forums to get AVG to
automatically run at startup, even installed as administrator. You'd think
you could somehow permantly set it to allow startup of AVG. Microsoft says
to have the antivirus software provider give the fix and on AVG's site, it
says Microsoft has corrected a bug that fixed the problem. Course, I haven't
installed RC1 yet to see if that helps.

Click the button, "Show for all users" and the buttons will work.

Note: When you first run Windows Defender it doesn't ask for elevated
permissions, this is why the buttons are grayed. When you click the "Show
for all users" button it then elevates the permissions for Defender and the
buttons will now work.

LOL, did this and it's stilled grayed out. Funny thing is that one pc has
the problem and the other doesn't. AVG starts up just fine but on the other
pc, I have to unblock at every startup. Not only that, but sometimes when I
right-click to select allow blocked program to run, it keeps opening the
config and won't let me select "allow this program to run".
